If your looking to jump into online marketing I highly suggest you start to dive into some sound and effective keyword research before you buy up all of these super backlinking tools.
Now don't get me wrong. I love me some off page seo tools but in the end your life is so much easier if you would just learn some effective keyword research.
Here are 3 quick tips to effective keyword research
1) It's a good practice to start with anything that you feel you can write or build content on.
Too many people shy away from weird niches like “how to build a chicken coop”. Sure it just might sound weird but if your in the market of say being an affiliate marketer your job is to get traffic to things that sell. I would first look at a subject matter that you can write some articles about or shoot videos about. If your not ashamed of the subject I say it's fair game.
Don't for a second start boxing yourself into what you can and can't advertise. Unless your selling your own product you really need to branch out and think outside of the box.
2) Use tools to speed up your game.
It's a known fact that the people who do the best in terms of organic traffic tend to have solid keyword research through tools. In tools, you can do it free like google keyword tool which works fine for many but only scratches the surface to what you need to know about a niche. Just because you were able to drill down and find some obscure long tail keyword doesn't mean there is traffic there or that there isn't competition there.
Use effective tools to quickly help you narrow down and focus on what you can and can't rank for quickly.
The 2 tools I recommend are:
Market Samurai
and
Both have sound keyword training that anyone should know if they are going down the path of trying to get organic search engine traffic to their website.
Think of tools as time savers. You can by far find everything you want to know about a keyword and it's competition and traffic but it would take you easily 10-100x longer than if you had a tool that pulled the data for you.
3) Make sure there is money in it
I've seen this too many times. I've seen students of mine go after a keyword in hopes of striking it big only to find out there is NO buying traffic there.
I'm not perfect and have done this myself too.
But… the great thing about building content (daily is best) is that if your have solid and effective keyword research you will be able to rank with little to no off page seo work. No backlinks!
The mindset of having to win at every keyword needs to be erased quickly. Your going to lose and your going to get your butt kicked many times. Main reason is your going after super competitive keywords and your emotionally tied to your work thinking “it's the greatest how come Google won't show it to their customers?”.
There is no doubt your information should be displayed but that's not how the Google Algorithm works.
But once you do start to rank you will start getting informational seekers vs buyers. This sucks. Trust me.
We all fall in love with traffic and realize the internet was based on information and so that means there are a TON of people looking for information vs buying something. Your job as a content provider is to provide information to BUYERS. When your doing keyword research don't fall in love with the big estimated traffic numbers because for the most part those numbers are tied to information seekers.
The sneaky marketer is the one who doesn't fall in love with high estimated clicks per day but would rather get a highly targeted visitor who is a buyer. It can be as little as 1 visitor a day. Why?
I would rather have 1 buying visitor a day that converts a 10% than a information seeker that comes 1,000 times a day yet converts at 0.01%.
You might think these are the same but in all actuality the difficulty of getting 1,000 hits a day for ONE keyword is not easy considering there is competition before you that is trying to get the piece of the pie.
The ability of increasing your traffic from say 1 hit a day to 5 is way easier than trying to do 100 hits a day to 500 hits on one keyword.
