Arsenic in Baby Rice?

Look, I'm asian and I was wondering when my 9 month old baby can have some baby rice…. until I stumbled on reports of FREAKING arsenic in them? WTF

Yeah… Baby Rice + Aresnic

A new study by independent consumer product analyst, Consumer Reports, has recently revealed that a good number of rice products – including baby rice and other products for infants – contain arsenic in levels that are more than “forgivable”. The products that tested positive for arsenic presence range from your typical brown rice, white rice, rice breakfast cereals, organic baby rice, and several different rice based products. The sad part about all of this is that arsenic is not regulated in food product; however, there is an existing policy on regulating the presence of arsenic in water. The standard is 10 parts per billion in drinking water.

baby rice

Arsenic is a known carcinogenic toxin (WTF) and studies have shown that it causes lung, skin, and bladder cancer. For babies, the intake of food containing worrisome amounts of this toxin can set them up for health problems in the future. Brain development is hampered if the child is exposed to arsenic intake even from the mother while the child is in the womb. Babies exposed to arsenic in the womb brought about by the mother eating food that contains arsenic will interfere with the child’s brain development and later on, reduce the intelligence of the child as well as become a cause for certain behavioral problems. The same results will be seen if children are exposed to the toxin in the early stages of their infancy through the intake of baby rice, baby rice cereals, or rice milk.

Arsenic and Baby Rice Doesn't Mix

There are two different types of arsenic: inorganic and organic arsenic. In almost every type of food product that Consumer Reports tested, they found arsenic in levels that can’t necessarily be ignored. Inorganic arsenic is a carcinogen and can be found in almost every type of food product. On the other hand, organic arsenic is less toxic than its inorganic counterpart, although this is still something that should not be ignored. Arsenic, however, is something that we can’t eliminate from the environment and is a substance that is naturally occurring. It can be found in air, water, and soil. Scientists, however, cannot yet determine if the substance bio-accumulated, meaning that it build up in the body over time and the effects are seen in the long term, or if the substance can actually be flushed out through normal body processes.

So, how does arsenic end up present in rice, anyway? Present farmlands where rice is currently being grown used to contain cotton. In the past, arsenic was put in the soil as a pesticide to control parasites that cling to the cotton. Now, the cotton has been replaced by rice, which is very effective in taking out the traces of arsenic from the soil. In effect, the soil becomes absent of the toxin and concentrates in the rice; it now carries what it cleared out of the soil. That was more than a century ago when arsenic was used as a pesticide in cotton fields. In the present day, consumers end up eating what remained of arsenic ridden pesticides in the past.

Baby rice and adult rice products aren’t the only source of arsenic, though. In fact, traces of arsenic have also been found in fruits and vegetables, aside from water. According to the EPA, there are really no “safe” levels of arsenic and they recommend a level of 5 parts per billion in drinking water. Compared to the government’s standard of 10 parts per billion, that is only half the amount. Among the states in the US, only New Jersey followed the EPA’s recommendation and established regulations to do so. Also, many studies suggest that a single serving of some rice products would give an adult almost one and a half times the amount of arsenic that could be ingested from drinking water. These levels are dangerously critical when you start to think about baby rice and baby rice products.

So what can we do in order to minimize, if not completely eliminate, arsenic from baby rice and other rice products? Most parents find this discovery extremely unsettling and disturbing, knowing that what we feed our children on a daily basis, especially during the early stages of their infancy, can harbor drastic consequences in the future. The first and most important step in the process is to actually be aware and care about what our diet is like. It is highly beneficial for parents to be well informed about what baby rice products would contain higher levels of arsenic. One remedy that has been suggested is to avoid rice altogether and instead, opt for barley or wheat. This is, of course, not entirely feasible for all families. It would be good to know that for the most part, it has been discovered that white rice coming from the farms of Louisiana, Texas, and Missouri have generally higher levels of arsenic than those produced in other states such as California. Rice from other countries, particularly those coming from Asia, has been found to contain less traces of the toxin. It is then, therefore, recommended that while no remedy has been found for presence of arsenic in these states, parents generally feed baby rice and other infant feeding products that come from California, Asia, or other areas where arsenic treatment of farms isn’t practiced. In most tests, as well, brown rice varieties and products would generally contain higher levels of the toxin than white varieties. This is because brown rice still contains part of the shell or husk, which is able to contain more arsenic. If you cannot do entirely without grains, change up your variety and explore other options.

washing rice

Changing the way you prepare your rice can also prove to be helpful in eliminating most of your food’s arsenic content. Washing raw rice in a ratio of six cups water to one-cup rice may effectively reduce the presence of arsenic by 30 percent. The modern method of cooking rice involves using just the right amount of water in order for it to be completely absorbed by the rice. While this might retain most of the nutritional value of the rice, it does not help in eliminating most of the toxins. Cooking in generous amounts of water and draining the excess may help to reduce the amount of inorganic arsenic in the rice. This is especially effective for baby rice.

If you got babies….. take some time to know what your feeding your baby.

If the cost of organic foods is too much let me help you make MORE money so stuff like arsenic doesn't end up in your little baby… If the goal is only $500/month that should surely help you pay for BETTER baby food and avoiding some of these toxic baby rice scares..

Louis Vuitton Purses – Are they Worth it?

Are Louis Vuitton purses really worth the money?

When you're trying to decide whether or not something is a good purchase, you need to assess that product's value.

And, no. I don't mean you need to estimate the street value of the materials used to make Louis Vuitton purses. Value is relative.

When making a sizable purchase, you can assess value by determining how buying that product will affect your financial standing.

Are you putting Lois Vuitton purses on a credit card?

Will you have to postpone the family vacation?

After spending thousands of dollars on a purse, will you have anything left to keep in it?

What are you Willing to Sacrifice for Louis Vuitton Purses?

If you have to make a sacrifice in order to buy something, you obviously can't really afford that item. In this instance, you have to decide whether or not the Louis purse is worth the resulting financial headache. This is exactly what I mean when I say “value is relative”. The value of a product is relative to the toll it takes on the consumer.

If you're affluent enough to drop mad crazy cash on Luis Vuitton purses, then by all means go for it. Unfortunately, this isn't a luxury most people have. If you're like most people, spending thousands of dollars on a product out of your price range would lead to a few sleepless nights.

So how does the average person go about buying Louis Vuitton purses without sacrificing sleep or a family vacation?

I recently took my amazing wife out for some afternoon shopping at the Galleria. While we were doing our thing at the mall, Mrs. Tam decided to pay the Louis Vuitton store a visit. Needles to say, she left that store with a designer bag in hand and a smile on her face.

Knowing how expensive Louis Vuitton purses are, my marketing mind started moving a million miles a minute….

Tons of different purses are sold at the Galleria mall. Why Louis Vuitton?

AND at what point did it become acceptable to spend thousands of dollars on a purse? At what point does that value translate to money?

After I thought about this more, I applied this thinking to my professional life. I actually get this all the time.

“Lawrence, why would someone pay you $25,000 for coaching?” Well, the answer is simple. It's a transfer of value.

I have the stones to place on a $25,000 price tag on my training because I am positive that my insight provides significant value. Value that can be absorbed and used to make far more than a measly $25 grand.

Obviously, Louis Vuitton felt like they had enough value to offer my wife, and plenty of other customers, in exchange for money. In other words, the company feels that their Louis Vuitton purses are valuable enough to slap a multi-thousand price-tag on. Considering the company's success, it's hard to argue with their business model.

Behind every action is some form of motivation. If you're looking for ways to make money on the internet, there is obviously a reason for it. Being fortunate enough to spend my afternoons shopping for luxurious items with my wife is one of my reasons. If I were still an engineer, there's just no way my wife would have walked out of the Galleria with a Louis Vuitton purse in hand.

When I was working as an engineer, buying expensive things didn't come without sacrifice. Buying my wife Louis Vuitton purses with my old income would have required us to cut back on vacations and going out.

Back when I was making a lot less money, I never would have thought trading thousands of dollars for a purse was a fair exchange of value. I didn't think any material item was worth sacrificing vacations with the kids or going out with friends.

Keep in mind that I still don't think it's worth it….

I just don't have the obligation of choosing between the two.

Are Louis Vuitton Purses Worth their Price-Tag? That's For YOU to Decide

Here's a perfect example of value being relative.

When my wife and I were in the Louis Vuitton store, there was another guy in there perusing expensive bags as well. Judging from the obvious context clues, I could tell that this guy was a Direct TV agent. He ended up spending $2,000 on a purse. Did he really think that was a fair exchange of value?

How does someone working a normal job pay that much money for a purse? Let's be honest for a second, guys. A purse is just a bag to carry stuff in at the end of the day. How can guy with an average income afford to go this far above and beyond the average retail price of a purse?

Just like any other profession, a Direct TV agent provides value and is willing to exchange that value for an income. This man was obviously aware of how expensive Louis Vuitton purses are. He's also aware of how much income he brings in.

Keep in mind that no one was holding a gun to his head and forcing him to buy a bag. This consumer, hopefully after a considerable amount of thinking, determined that this would be a beneficial purchase in some way or another. While he was clearly willing to throw down some hard earned cash on a bag, did he really do a good job of assessing value?

I continue to hammer home the fact that value is relevant. To me, assessing the value of something is more than just determining whether or not I can survive until payday.

Before making a sizable purchase, you have to think to yourself…

… “What will this product do for me in the long run? Will this product improve MY value?”

Louis Vuitton Purses and the Power of Leverage

I, admittedly, do not have too much experience in purse evaluation. But as an entrepreneur I can see how the sale of Louis Vuitton purses relates to my business. Providing value will always be a profitable practice

What I'm about to say applies to professionals in all fields of employment.

If you have a boss in any capacity, your employer is making more money than they are paying you. It”s that simple. This pretty much means that you are worth more than you are being paid. The difference is that you personally lack the leverage that an established business possesses. Therefore, your employer's position of authority allows them to low ball you. But what if it were possible to acquire this leverage?

Leverage is a incredibly potent weapon in the business realm. This is the exact weapon that allows Louis Vuitton to sell incredibly expensive purses.Louis Vuitton Purses - Are They Worth It?

Sure. The man I mentioned earlier may truly believe that using a sizable chunk of his income to buy a bag is reasonable. That's fine. He and I don't value the same things. We'll agree to disagree on this one.

In my mind, time is our most valuable asset. The more freedom you have, the more rewarding your time is. Trading your precious time for a less than stellar paycheck is no way to live.

Being affluent enough to buy Louis Vuitton purses is great. That being said, not having to work is far more rewarding. In the professional world, your assumed value is expressed in your salary or hourly wage. As an entrepreneur, I'm constantly learning and gaining personal value. This consistent self- improvement translates directly into money in the bank.

Climbing the ranks towards wealth in the corporate world is a difficult process that requires obligatory water cooler chats and office politics. The path to success as an entrepreneur in my industry is a much clearer one: Consistently focus on increasing your personal value. Doing so will provide you with the leverage necessary to get paid like you deserve.

An individual's attitude and mindset is almost always a reflection of the people they choose to socialize with. If you're constantly socializing with affluent people who can spend thousands on a hand bag without losing a wink of sleep, you'll start to understand that obtaining money isn't as difficult as it's made out to be.

It is always better to spend your money on products and services that provide you with personal value. Cultivating talents and acquiring skills are great ways to allocate your funds. This sort of transaction is an investment as opposed to a purchase. Consistently adding this personal value will allow you to say “goodbye” to the traditional job market and “hello” to Louis Vuitton Purses.

Working for an employer is old school. Traditional employees work traditional hours and are paid traditional salaries  By learning marketable skills, you can establish your own stream of income. Your value and personal efforts alone dictate your earning potential.

Walk In Shower Designs Are Real?

walk in shower designs

This is an image I uploaded in facebook when I was thinking about walk in shower designs and if they are actually practical. The comments and likes in facebook came in 6 hours. (reason is because of my internet marketing relationship with so many people, learn more here how I built an internet following and do stuff like this on a monday morning)

walk in shower designs for real people?

So I was doing some house hunting with the wife. After paying off my current home we decided to see what a “buyers” market really means.

We looked at a couple and this “gym” type shower is just off the wall.

  • 2 shower heads
  • all glass
  • 2 shower figures
  • full walk in (probably 12 feet deep)
  • and a granite seat (or is it some other type of stone)?

Walk In Shower Designs – Cost

What would you think this upgrade costs?

From memory this upgrade was about $8,000. A little bit crazy but if you see the rest of the house and the fact it's in Texas it makes sense.

Is it worth it, should you add a walk in shower designs into your total purchase decision?

The more I read about resell value on houses it comes down to the same things. Plus watching HGTV with house hunters, love it or list it, and property brothers:

  1. Location, Location, Location (include work distance and schools)
  2. Curb Appeal
  3. Kitchen
  4. Master Bath
  5. Master Closet
  6. Usable Space
  7. Upgrade Floors
  8. Useable Outdoor Space (depending on area)
  9. Price Relationship To Other Homes

Below is another setup with a width type walk in shower. Walk in shower designs  that accent the room vs just being stashed in the corner I think really brings out the whole “spa” feelings.

Is necessary? well, is 5,000 sq ft necessary? he he he

walk in shower designs

Sure there are more but this is a common trend I'm looking at.

So should you have consider walk in shower designs for your current and new home? I don't know…. I guess it depends if your plan to treat your home like an “asset”.

If  you think the home you live in as an asset and you want to make money on it all upgrades to bathrooms and kitchens are pretty much good to go in my book (I'm not a professional so take this with a grain of salt).

Would I do it? The cost of utilizing walk in shower designs for my new home could be used to enlarge the breakfast area or add a garage.

Increasing wet areas vs structural areas…. I'm leaning on structural.

I'm not saying money is no object but it's a simple fact the home you live it should be USED… If you have a use for 2 shower heads… go for it.

If it's just for the “bling factor” and never really used… I think it's best to use that money to throw at marble floors in the master bath (wink wink).

So that is my normal monday morning… just chilling with the wife and took the kids to see some homes. From walk in shower designs to wine cellars, it's just cool to hang out when others are fighting traffic to work.

Welcome Baby Lawson To The World

I posted this on facebook and within 24hours I have a ton of people comment and like the image.

WHY?

Over the years I have been helping a lot of people build their income part time as I have.

Now that I am retired from engineering and a full time dad of 3 kids and a husband to my high school sweetheart many seem to think I'm going to make even MORE money by working more.

To me that is just silly

I didn't start my businesses to be rich. I started them to spend more time with my family.

So if your looking to break out and live free.. it's important to build real relationships with people.

How is this done?

1) phone calls
2) webinars
3) blog articles
4) videos
5) live events
6) e-mail (subscribers)
7) facebook
8) etc

the real key is doing this on a tight schedule and building multiple relationships at the same time.
